Magwinya & Zamalek from waf. available now on Vimeo.
Magwinya & Zamalek chronicles the ten day skate tour across Lagos, Nigeria leading up to the Go Skate Day event featuring skaters from across Africa (Botswana, Ghana, Zimbabwe and South Africa). The film is fondly named after Magwinya (a local South African pastry) and Zamalek (a nickname for a popular beer brand in South Africa) which the waf. team discovered on one of their visits to South Africa. The name choice signifies waf.’s growing relationship with South Africa and communicates the synergy between both cultures through a shared love of skate culture.
While showcasing various locations in Lagos, the film documents how skaters interact with their immediate environment, the surrounding community, and the security personnel challenging their movement as they skate along the streets of Lagos showing off their skating prowess.
The tour video was filmed by Jonathan Pinkard and Mosako Lowsso Chalashika and edited by Mosako Lowsso Chalashika and Jomi Elias Bello. The film also features photographs by Pieter Retief and Mosako Lowsso Chalashika and the skaters: Fahd Bello, Kagiso Leburu, Henry Okwubuasi, Blessing Ewona, Abimsola Naiwo, Ogochukwu Stephanie, Kyle Kheswa, Chenai Gwandure, Cephas Cephyo, Tolani Adu, John "believe the og" Bovefio, Laboomz, Anthony Churchy and Ziggy Senshi.
